I’ve been busy making Christmas gifts for loved-ones. And there is nothing better than being able to surprise kids with their favourite cartoon characters that YOU made.
The neighbourhood kids just love Paw Patrol, so I decided to make a few pups to surprise them for Christmas. But luckily, I didn’t have to start the pattern from scratch. There is already a wonderful and free Labrador Puppy crochet pattern by Lucy Kate Easton. So these lovely pups were made using that pattern, with a few modifications that I have detailed below:
Skye
You will need:
- Lucy Kate Easton’s Crochet Labrador Pattern
- 25g Pink yarn: For her t-shirt and goggles
- 25g Cream yarn: For her nose and paws
- 50g Light-brown yarn: For her body, head, ears, legs and tail
- 5g Dark brown (or black) yarn: for the facial embroidery
- 5g White yarn: for the propeller motif on her chest
- Pink safety eyes
- Size 3.5mm (E, 4) crochet hook
- Yarn needle
Stitches Used:
- Chain (CH)
- Single Crochet (SC)
- Slip Stitch
- Back-Post Single Crochet (BPSC)
- Loop Stitch (Loop ST)
- Back-stitch (embroidery) (Loop ST)
Instructions
Head
- Use the cream yarn for rounds 1-9.
- Switch to the light-brown yarn for the remainder of the head.
- At round 23, place the safety eyes between rounds 10 and 11
- TIP: if you don’t have pink safety eyes, use clear safety eyes and wrap some pink yarn behind them, this will make them look pink. Alternatively, if you have some pink paint on-hand, you could paint the back of the clear safety eyes.
- To make Skye’s little curl:
- CH 21
- Make 2 SC in each chain (this will make a tight curl)
- Stitch it to her head above and in the centre of her eyes. Fasten the tip of the curl to her forehead (otherwise it will stick-out and make her look like a unicorn!)
Face
- Use the dark-brown or black yarn to stitch-on a nose. I did this by threading my yarn into the starting ring of the magic circle, and made a V shape with the yarn. I then repeatedly stitched into the magic circle and the stitches above it to make a triangle nose.
- Use the same yarn to back-stitch a smile onto Skye
- Finally, use the same yarn, or black thread to give Skye some eyelashes
Ears (make 2)
- Instead of following the pattern for the Labrador ears, follow the instructions below. You will be working alternate rows of SC and Loop Stitch:
- Using the light-brown yarn: CH 3
- SC in the second CH from hook, and in the next CH (2 SC). CH 1, turn.
- Loop Stitch in each ST (2 Loop ST). CH 1, turn
- 2 SC in each ST (4 SC). CH 1, turn
- Loop Stitch in each ST (4 Loop ST). CH 1, turn
- 2 SC in first ST, 1 SC in next 2 STs, 2 SC in last ST (6 SC). CH 1, turn.
- Loop Stitch in each ST (6 Loop ST). CH 1, turn
- 2 SC in first ST, 1 SC in next 4 STs, 2 SC in last ST (8 SC). CH 1, turn.
- Loop Stitch in each ST (8 Loop ST). CH 1, turn
- Repeat row 8
- Repeat row 9
- SC2TOG, 1 SC in next 4 STs, SC2TOG (6 SC). CH 1, turn.
- Loop Stitch in each ST (6 Loop ST). CH 1, turn
- SC2TOG, 1 SC in next 2 STs, SC2TOG (4 SC). CH 1, turn.
- Loop Stitch in each ST (4 Loop ST). CH 1, turn
- SC in each ST (4 SC). Finish off.
- Stitch the ears to the head about 1.5cm from either side of the curl.
- Cut the “loops” of the loop stitch to make them look furry and trim fur to desired length
Goggles
- Using the pink yarn, CH 8, and join to first CH with a slip-stitch to make a circle. CH 10, then join to the 3rd CH to create a second circle (with a 2x CH bridge).
- Make 16 SC in the first circle. Make 1 SC in each of the 2 CHs, then make 16 SC in the second circle.
- Slip stitch into the 2x CH bridge (on the reverse side of the SCs) and slip stitch into the first 8 SCs of the first circle. CH 31, then slip stitch back down the chain towards the goggles to make the google tie. Slip stitch in the next 8 SCs of the first circle. Slip Stitch into the 2 SCs that form the bridge, then slip stitch into the next 8 SCs of the second circle. CH 31, then slip stitch back down the chain. Slip stitch in the next 8 SCs. Finish off.
- Stitch the goggles to the head. I placed mine on top of the curl. I then fastened half the “ties” to the head underneath the ears, and left the other half loose.
Body
- Use the light-brown yarn for rounds 1-10
- Switch to pink for rounds 11-27. In round 12, use BPSC instead of normal SC. This will create a “border” for the bottom of the t-shirt
- Switch to white for rounds 28-29
- Do one extra round of SC to create a neck (8 SC) then finish off.
- Sew the head onto the body
Propeller Motif (make 3 blades)
- CH 6
- SC in the second CH from hook. SC in next ST, HDC in next 2 STs, make 3 DC in last ST. On the other side of the CH, HDC in the next 2 STs, then SC in the final 2 STs.
- Sew each of the propeller blades onto the body
Front Legs (make 2)
- Use the cream yarn for rounds 1-11
- Change to light-brown yarn and complete the 12th round alternating spike stitch and SC
- Use light-brown yarn for rounds 12-20
- Use pink yarn for rounds 21-23
- Stuff leg, then use SC to close the leg in the direction from heel to toe
- With the pink yarn, do a round of surface crochet in round 21 to give the t-shirt arms a “border”
- Sew to the top-sides of the body
Back Legs (make 2)
- Use the cream yarn for rounds 1-11
- Change to light-brown yarn and complete the 12th round alternating spike stitch and SC
- Use light-brown yarn for rounds 12-23
- Stuff leg, then use SC to close the leg from side to side
- Sew to the bottom of the body
Tail
- Follow instructions but alternate 1 round of SC / 1 round of Loop ST
- Cut the loops of the loop stitch to make it look furry and trim fur to the desired length
- Attach to the back of Skye, below the t-shirt
