I’ve been busy making Christmas gifts for loved-ones. And there is nothing better than being able to surprise kids with their favourite cartoon characters that YOU made.
The neighbourhood kids just love Paw Patrol, so I decided to make a few pups to surprise them for Christmas. But luckily, I didn’t have to start the pattern from scratch. There is already a wonderful and free Labrador Puppy crochet pattern by Lucy Kate Easton. So these lovely pups were made using that pattern, with a few modifications that I have detailed below:
Marshall
You will need:
- Lucy Kate Easton’s Crochet Labrador Pattern
- 50g white yarn
- 50g red yarn
- 10g black yarn: for his spots and details
- 5g yellow yarn: for the braid on his hat and the fire detail on his chest
- 5g Yellow yarn: for the details on his chest, shoulders and hat
- Blue safety eyes
- Size 3.5mm (E, 4) crochet hook
- Yarn needle
Stitches Used:
- Chain (CH)
- Single Crochet (SC)
- Slip Stitch
- Back-Post Single Crochet (BPSC)
Instructions
Head
- Use white yarn yarn for all rounds
- At round 23, place the safety eyes between rounds 10 and 11
Face
- Use the black yarn to stitch-on a nose. I did this by threading my yarn into the starting ring of the magic circle, and made a V shape with the yarn. I then repeatedly stitched into the magic circle and the stitches above it to make a triangle nose.
- Embroider some spots on his face
- Use the same yarn to back-stitch a smile onto Marshall
- Finally, use the same yarn, to give Marshall some eyebrows
Ears (make 2)
- Use the white yarn and follow the ear pattern
- Use the black yarn to embroider large spots
- Attach to the head
Hat
- Using the red yarn, create a magic circle with 6 SCs (6)
- *2 SC* 6 times (12)
- *1 SC, 2 SC* 6 times (18)
- 1 SC in each of the first 6 STs, 2 SC in the next 6 STs, 1 SC in each of the last 6 STs (24)
- SC in each ST (24)
- 1 SC in each of the first 7 STs, 2 SC in the next 8 STs, 1 SC in each of the last 7 STs (30)
- SC in each ST (30)
- 1 SC in each of the first 9 STs, 2 SC in the next 9 STs, 1 SC in each of the last 9 STs (36)
- SC in each ST (36)
- 1 SC in each of the first 11 STs, 2 SC in the next 20 STs, 1 SC in each of the last 11 STs (42)
- SC in each ST (42)
- To make the brim: *2 x SC, 2 SC* 14 times (58)
- SC in each ST (58)
- *3 x SC, 2 SC* 14 times (72)
- Slip stitch around the brim of the hat
To create the right shape, we will now use surface crochet
- Join red yarn at the back of the hat, above the brim. Surface SC up and over the top of the hat, in the centre of the back. Stop in the middle of the second round of the hat.
- Surface SL ST down the left side of the front of the hat until you get just above the brim
- Surface SL ST across the front of the hat above the brim until you get to the same place on the other side
- Surface SL ST up the right side of the front of the hat until you join the centre of the surface crochet triangle
To add the yellow braid, we will use surface SC
- Join yellow yarn to one of the bottom points of the surface SL ST triangle.
- Surface SC around the back of the hat, just above the brim to create the yellow braid
Now just use the black yarn to embroider a black paw print on the front of the hat in the centre of the triangle. Stuff the hat lightly and sew to the top of the head.
Body
- Use the white yarn for rounds 1-10
- Switch to red for rounds 11-27. In round 12, use BPSC instead of normal SC. This will create a “border” for the bottom of the t-shirt
- Switch to yellow for rounds 28-29
- Do one extra round of SC to create a neck (8 SC) then finish off.
- Embroider on a yellow flame to the front of the body, just below the neck.
- Sew the head onto the body
Front Legs (make 2)
- Use the white yarn for rounds 1-20
- Use red yarn for rounds 21-23
- Stuff leg, then use SC to close the leg in the direction from heel to toe
- With the red yarn, do a round of surface crochet in round 21 to give the t-shirt arms a “border”
- Embroider on some spots
- Sew to the top-sides of the body
Back Legs (make 2)
- Use the white yarn for all rounds
- Stuff leg, then use SC to close the leg from side to side
- Embroider on some spots
- Sew to the bottom of the body
Tail
- Use the white yarn and follow instructions
- Embroider on some spots
- Attach to the back of Marshall, below the t-shirt
Now your Marshall is finished! I hope you love the way he turns out.
